The thing is, it's dark almost everywhere so you need to have it on almost constantly. This game tells you at the beginning to use your flashlight only when it's really dark, because if you keep it on too long it will go out. If there's one thing I hate, it's dumb flashlight mechanics, horror game or not. If you ever want to read something or try and look through a window, you'll have to fight the focus/blurry vision first. When you want to try and look at something up close, your vision goes into this focus mode where you only see the closest object and everything else goes blurry. Also, if something is chasing you, which is rare by the way, you won't outrun it with your power walking speed. This especially gets annoying when you have to backtrack and trust me, you'll be doing a lot of that in this game. It sounds minor but I found it annoying pretty quickly when I wanted to get to a place quicker only go bouncing around when I hit a corner or table. You move as you would in any other first person horror game (you can switch to third person view but it's kind of awkward to play this way) but when you bump into a wall or any physical object while you're running you will bounce off it instead of running alongside of it. Now the bad points and there are A LOT of them. Almost compariable to the graphics in Outlast but not quite the same. The graphics of the game look pretty good. I'll start off with the only good thing about this game, in my opinion, the graphics. Lots of flashing lights so be warned if you have epilepsy. I'd also like to point out a seizure warning during the final part of the game. I'll try my best not to spoil anything too major but honestly there isn't much to spoil here story wise. I'm afraid I cannot recommend this game to anybody whether they like horror games or not.

The Council of Hanwell comes free to those that own Welcome to Hanwell, so do yourself a favor and just pick that one up instead. While this is still ultimately the chunk of Welcome to Hanwell, these elements still didn't feel so awful in the bigger release as they were spaced out, and more atmosphere was present.

Instead of having a Silent Hill inspired open-world experience, players now get another run-of-the-mill note and key finding simulator with bad combat and simplistic puzzles. It takes away everything that made Welcome to Hanwell such a diamond in the rough. It's unfortunate, but The Council of Hanwell is just not a sturdy release. The most impressive thing about The Council of Hanwell is its graphics, which are deeply enjoyable and border the photorealistic quality seen in Resident Evil 7. The story is told entirely through note pick-ups and tape recorder dialogue, with some tidbits given on each loading screen.

They're easy to solve, though some do require nook-and-cranny scavenging. The puzzles, again, are another lackluster element that just seem to be there for the sake of having content. The combat system definitely could have used a lot more love, and this version of the game makes it feel like a tacked-on mechanic at best. The boss fight is ridiculously obnoxious and goes on for far too long, with the same repetitive actions having to be repeated over and over for about 5 solid minutes.

There are three enemy types and one boss in this release one of them can't hurt you, the other one does moderate damage, and a big, hulking man that looks like one of Outlast's naked twins can kill in one hit. All is ultimately revealed in the end, but the rest of the time is spent guessing what's going on and why the assigned tasks need to be done. Unfortunately, with much of the open-world exploration cut out, so is much of the story. Attempting to find him, players will visit six locations that are filled with puzzles, key finding, and a few enemies. The answers all seem to lie with a man known only as The Doctor. Playing as an unknown, amnesia-stricken human, gamers must find out what has happened to them. With a run time of 3-4 hours, The Council of Hanwell exists purely for those that do not have the time, or want to put in the effort, to get through the 10+ hours of Welcome to Hanwell. In this to-the-point release, players are ushered through the six 'major' locations of Hanwell, it cuts out all of the open-world elements of its predecessor in lieu of a more linear, story-driven focus. The Council of Hanwell is the short and condensed version of Welcome to Hanwell, a Silent Hill inspired open-world horror survival game.
